Terry Whalen and Hot Powder have been compared to early ZZ Top, but what you will hear is one-of-a-king sound from frontman Terry Whalen and a band that delivers an original blend of blues and rock that will leave you wanting more.  Whether it is the full band or Terry Whalen Squared or Terry doing a solo show the message is the same. Heartfelt rock and blues

With a dedication to music that spans over 35 years in 2007 Terry decided it was time to set about releasing a catalogue of material that in some cases goes back as many years.  Over the past 14 years this material jump started a collection of material that appeared on the debut release of Sleepwalker’s Blues in 2007. This was quickly followed by the release of  The Devil’s Fireplace in 2008 and the 2009 release of A Wicked Driving Rain. April 12, 2011 marked the release of their fourth CD, A Work in Progress, an 11 track project.  February, 2014 saw the release of their 5th disc, Two Steps Forward, in January 2018, Terry's 6th CD titled Terry Whalen with Jock Downs - Nasty Little Bits - a striped down delivery of blues based storytelling and most recently in October 2021 CD # 7 - Terry Whalen and Friends - There Ain't Nothing in this World was released. The collection of the most amazing friend and musicians came together to create a CD with all the proceeds going to the SPCA.  Thanks to Steve Marriner, Matt Andersen, Garrett Mason, Bobby Cameron, John Campbelljohn, Ross Neilsen, Travis Furlong, Tim Gallant, Andy Daly, Shaun O"Reilly, Sherri Chenard, Marcel St. Cyr, Warren Beatteay, Tiago Nathanel and Tim Irving for joining the band.

Terry Whalen and Hot Powder  is:

Terry Whalen is a singer/songwriter who has been playing guitar and developing his songwriting chops for over 35 years. His influences may surprise some when you read the names of hard rock acts like Van Halen, AC/DC and ZZ Top to perhaps less mainstream artists and songwriters as John Haitt and Steve Earle. Influencial artists also include Albert Collins, Webb Wilder, and Steve Earle. But throughout the years a common theme and interest has never been very far from the top of his list; the blues.

Artist/storytellers like John Lee Hooker, Muddy Watters, Willie Dixon, Lonnie Johnson and Howlin' Wolf to name but a few, have left Terry with a deep appreciation for the history of the blues and the unique approach to storytelling and self-expression these blues legends left behind. Terry's love of the guitar and creating music, has led him on his current journey of combining the blues with a pounding rock vibe; providing something new with a fresh edge but also a connection and a "tip of the hat" to the past greats.

Terry James Whalen - On bass with The Terry Whalen Band is Terry James Whalen, who, while following in the ol' man's footsteps brings a modern vibe and relevance to the music. Terry has been hammering away on guitar and bass for many years but currently plays a major role by delivering the thundering half of the rhythm section for Hot Powder. He'll be laying down a back beat so big pappa has more room to wind it out on guitar. At 33, Terry has been an important member of the band since the beginning, starting out on rhythm guitar and moving to bass in the past twelve years. The truth is, it has yet to be determined if it is a bigger joy for Terry to be playing with the band or for his proud papa to have his son by his side. Whether it is roots, rock or blues Terry James has heard and fell in love with it all. It has been a great ride so far!

Phil Sutherland (Drums) - Phil Sutherland began drumming when he first could hold two spoons in his hands and make a beat on any surface available in his family home. Growing up in a very musical family, Phil’s dad Vaden recognized early his son’s talent and one night, took him to their church and sat Phil down at the drum kit. His Dad had little to no knowledge of the drums himself, but said “if you’re going to play, then play”. Vaden sat down behind his piano and began to play a tune. Lo and behold, young Phil was able to catch the beat and roll with it. His first time playing live was at church when he was only five years old. From there,Phil got the chance to play in a rotation of 4 drummers at their church. He,being the youngest, but also very observant, payed close attention to his elders on the kit and took note of what they did. He then, on his own time during the week, would go to the kit and try and duplicate what the others above him did. This continued for several years and before long, Phil was the main drummer at the church. He was part of a local youth band for several years who toured all over Atlantic Canada every weekend, went on a 5 show in 7 day tour through the greater Toronto and Ottawa regions and capped that particular project off with a CD of originals tunes written by he and his band mates. Phil stepped away from the drums to focus on a career, family, and other commitments for a few years but occasionally would hop back on the kit for special events. During Covid, Phil and longtime friend Terry Whalen connected via social media and Terry invited him to be a part of an album project that Terry had been working on. After submitting a couple drum tracks of Terry’s originals to him for the album, Terry opened the invitation to join the band. Phil’s desire and passion for music can be heard though his strong sense of dynamic drumming. He strives for perfection but also likes to have a lot of fun along the way, never taking an opportunity to get behind the kit for granted.

To date the boys have had the honor of sharing the stage with an incredible list of musician and bands including the incredible Matt Andersen, MonkeyJunk, Thom Swift, Charlie A'Court, Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers, The Tom Fun Orchestra, Morgan Davis, Dan Doiron, Sam Moon, Matt Minglewood, Comedien Gerry Dee, McGinty, The Divorcees, Dave Gunning, Carson Downey, Christina Martin, David Myles, Mel Keith, and Ron Hynes.

As a presenter and a fan of East Coast music, I've been blessed to meet many amazing artists. Every now and then you meet someone who is as authentic off stage as they are onstage. Terry Whalen and his band are among the most genuine artists and individuals I've had the privilege of working with. The perfect blend of talent, rock and blues that demand your attention and an engaging appreciation for every person in the room. It's clear these boys love what they're doing and they're doing it well! “A Tasty Stew of Dirty Rockin Blues” indeed! And hungry for more when the night is over.

Bob Mersereau  at CBC

"You could hear them playing a couple of blocks away, the kind of music you can't pass by. The Terry Whalen Band already had the place rockin' and the crowd dancing right up against the stage. Even though it was October, everybody was hot and sweaty and didn't care."

Jay Chetwynd - Smokin' Blues Fest - Windsor, NS

"I have had the pleasure of working with The Terry Whalen Band twice now and both times have been fantastic. It was because of the response from attendees the first time that I brought them back for the second. Great guys, great players and very interactive with their fans, which goes a long way in the music world today. And a little bone-knawin' blues has never been a bad thing."

Jeff Liberty - JL Artists

TWB is like classic ZZ Top on Steroids!!! Terry Whalen rocks the very foundation of you soul! That is the bottom line!

Terry Parsons -  CHMR-fm St John's NL

Singer Songwriter and Blues Man extraordinaire, Terry Whalen is one of Atlantic Canada's Best!"

Jim Frame - Good friend and regular festival attender throughout Atlantic Canada

"Managed to catch the TWB two weeks in a row (Dutch Mason Blues Fest in Truro and the Larlee Creek Hullabaloo in Perth-Andover, NB).. they managed to blow away the crowd in both places... the band put on a great show and their music is outstanding -- once they get into the groove, the whole place comes alive and the show is constrained only by the restrictions of a 45 minute set limit that most festivals insist upon -- these guys obviously love what they do and if they didn't have to follow the time constraints, I believe they would go for hours - You have to check these dudes out!!! You will be glad you did - tell them Jim sent you!! LOL"
